Tanning Salons Safety Guidelines and Recommendations
The Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations (Tanning Equipment) (Appendix A) sets forth rules for tanning equipment, which owners and operators should be aware of and follow. Additionally, the rules developed specifically for Tanning Salon Summerhill adherence are listed below and should be followed by owners, operators, and users of tanning equipment.
General
The Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations of the federal government stipulate that all tanning equipment sold, resold, leased, or imported into Canada must meet certain requirements. Owners should confirm with their equipment supplier that any tanning equipment and related equipment they plan to buy and use, either for themselves or for others, complies with the regulations.
Operators need to be aware of exposure and skin type protocols. To educate and support the public in the safer use of tanning equipment, operators and users must be familiar with these guidelines and suggestions and municipal and provincial and territory public health and public safety requirements. Tanning salon operators should ensure that their staff obtain sufficient training on using tanning equipment, including certification programmes when applicable.
Operators of Body Contouring Summerhill equipment should find out a client's capacity to tan (i.e., skin type), history of sunburns and skin cancer, history of skin infections, rashes, or other skin conditions (e.g., open wounds or lesions), as well as any photosensitizing agents they may be used before or during the exposure.
Operators of tanning salons should keep client records. This material aims to help customers understand how the variables that affect one's ability to tan relate to UV radiation and to be utilized for exposure planning.
